Birthdays

It was my birthday yesterday. Hard to believe I’m 21 already – just seems like yesterday I was 51. I have been spoiled rotten. On the 4th it was Jacquie’s birthday (owner of Trixie and Holly) so us biking girls, plus a few extra friends, held a double celebration out at the southern Wairarapa beach house of Andree, in a settlement called Mangatoetoe. We met in her beautiful abode for coffee and snacks, then walked for two hours up the riverbed to a DoC hut where we stopped for lunch:birthday-007Here’s Heather (real owner of Lily) and Sally (whose husband bred Trixie) in the doorway of the hut:birthday-011

The walk was tough, but lovely scenery and most unusual rocks which look like greenstone, but obviously are not:birthday-005birthday-004

That’s Jacko stroking the rock. We also saw lovely native fauna (and mean-looking bush lawyer), including these unusual coprosma which look like the original bad hair day:birthday-009

Then we walked home again – another two hours, boy did I sleep well that night – and passed this place. I just loved the juxtaposition of the “D&D Decorating” truck and the crayfish pots with all the buoys and ropes:birthday-012

When we got back to Ondy’s (Andree) we had champagne and cake. Here are the two birthday girls with their cakes:

Then yesterday, for my real birthday, we had a romantic dinner for two in Martinborough at Wendy’s French Bistro where the food is very good. It’s owned and run by Jim and Wendy Campbell, parents of the more famous John. They’re lovely people and it shines through in Wendy’s cooking. Her profiteroles are to die for. Before dinner we stopped at Mum’s for Bollinger.

Birthdays are great!
